How Comprehensive Two Wheeler Insurance Premium is Calculated?

The calculation of the premium for a comprehensive bike insurance policy is done in the following ways:

Insured Declared Value of Bike

The 'Insured Declared Value ' of the bike

The 'Insured Declared Value ' (IDV) of your bike is the maximum sum that your insurer can pay you in the event of the total loss of your bike, including irreparable damage and thefts. Your bike's IDV is obtained by adding its price with the cost of the relevant accessories.

'No Claim Bonus' (NCB) and other discounts

'No Claim Bonus ' (NCB) and other discounts

The NCB discount is considered while computing your new bike insurance premium and any other discounts offered by the insurer. However, it is important to remember that the NCB discount only applies to the damage component of your bike insurance premium.

Third Party Bike Insurance Cover

The third-party cover

The third-party bike insurance cover is determined based on the bike's engine cubic capacity and following the annual insurance premium rates declared by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

The premium of add-ons

The premium of add-ons

Each add-on you include to your comprehensive bike insurance policy affects the overall bike insurance premium. Therefore, you must ascertain the cost of each add-on or the aggregate cost of all the selected add-ons.

Factors that Determine Comprehensive Bike Insurance Premium

1

The IDV/market value of the bike

The IDV of your bike is its market value after accounting for depreciation. Since no depreciation is accumulated on a new bike, the IDV of a new bike is higher than that of an old bike. Therefore, your bike's IDV is the highest sum an insurer can provide you in the case of irreparable damage or theft of the bike.
2

The age of the bike

The age of your bike plays a vital role in determining a comprehensive bike insurance premium. Generally, new bikes have a higher premium as compared to old ones.
3

Type of Two wheeler

A bike engine’s cubic capacity affects the comprehensive bike insurance insurance premium. Higher the cubic capacity, higher will be the insurance premium. The type of bike model and class of the vehicle, place of registration, and fuel type, also play an integral role in determining the premium for comprehensive bike insurance policy.
4

Registration Location

Your comprehensive bike insurance premium is likely to be high if your bike has been registered in a metropolitan city or a high-risk and high-traffic area. On the other hand, bikes registered in remote towns and villages with a low incidence of road accidents tend to have a low bike insurance price.
5

No Claim Bonus (NCB)

The 'No Claim Bonus' in your comprehensive two-wheeler insurance policy is a reward for zero claims during a particular year. If you have an NCB accumulated on your bike insurance policy and do the timely renewal, you can avail a discount on your new bike insurance premium. For example, after the first claims-free year, you earn an NCB discount of 20%, and after five consecutive claim-free years, you are eligible for an NCB discount of 50%.

How to Reduce Comprehensive Bike Insurance Premium?

Here’s how to reduce comprehensive bike premium:

'No Claim Bonus' (NCB) and other discounts

Earn No Claim Bonus

If you’re riding your bike safely following all traffic rules, your insured bike has less probability of having an accident. This will minimize the chance of raising bike insurance claims. Also, avoid raising claims for minor accidents. With this, you can earn a 'No Claim Bonus' and secure a discount of 20% on your comprehensive bike insurance policy renewal. The discount can go up to 50% if you don't file a bike insurance claim for five consecutive years.

Insured Declared Value of Bike

Opt for Reasonable IDV

You must choose the IDV of your bike carefully, since it directly affects your comprehensive bike insurance premium, and the amount you receive from your insurer in the event of total loss of your bike. Quoting a lower IDV will reduce your bike insurance coverage, whereas quoting a higher one will lead to a higher-than-necessary bike insurance premium. Therefore, it is essential to fix the accurate IDV for your bike.

Avoid Choosing Unnecessary Add on Covers

Avoid Choosing Unnecessary Add on Covers

Choosing add-on covers in your comprehensive bike insurance policy wisely is important. Each add-on carries a price that increases your bike insurance premium. Therefore, assessing your bike insurance requirements is pivotal before selecting the necessary add-ons. Using our bike insurance calculator, you can determine the impact of each add-on feature on your bike insurance premium.

Renew Your Policy on Time

Renew Your Policy on Time

Ensure that you renew your comprehensive bike insurance policy at least a few weeks before the expiration of the policy. This approach ensures you do not lose the ‘No Claim Bonus’ accumulated on your previous policy. It also gives you sufficient time to re-evaluate the add-ons you want to include in your new policy.

Calculate Comprehensive Bike Insurance Premium

The premium you must pay is one of the critical elements that will influence the sort of bike insurance plan you select. You can use a premium calculator, a simple tool, to calculate the actual premium you will have to pay for the two -wheeler insurance policy of your choice.

What is IDV & Its Importance While Buying Bike Insurance Policy

IDV, or insured declared value, is the highest amount for which your motorcycle may be insured under a comprehensive bike insurance policy. If the two -wheeler is lost or stolen, this is the insurance reimbursement. In other words, your bike's insured declared value is the price at which it is now being sold.If the insurer and the insured mutually agreed upon the greater IDV, you would get a more significant sum as compensation for a total loss or theft.
IDV in bike insurance is calculated based on market value of your two wheeler when the policy commences, which keeps changing with time and depreciation. The following table shows how depreciation value on IDV in two wheeler insurance changes with time:

Age of Two Wheeler Depreciation Percentage to Calculate IDV
Two-wheeler not more than 6 months old 5%
More than 6 months, but not more than a year 15%
More than 1 year, but less than 2 years 20%
More than 2 years, but less than 3 years 30%
More than 3 years, but less than 4 years 40%
More than 4 years, but less than 5 years 50%

IDV plays an integral role in comprehensive bike insurance policy. Note that the lower the IDV, the lower the premium you will have to pay for your bike insurance policy. It is wise to choose the IDV closest to your two-wheeler’s market value. With this, you can avail fair compensation on your bike insurance claim.

Comprehensive Bike Insurance FAQs

Two wheeler insurance is an insurance policy required to provide protection to your two wheeler against any damage which might result into a financial loss. A comprehensive insurance policy provides protection to your two wheeler due to any impact damage, fire, theft, earthquake etc. In addition to this, it provides cover against any third party liability in term of death, bodily injury and third party property damage.
There two types of insurance policies – comprehensive and third party liability. Comprehensive insurance ensures complete protection to your two wheeler due to any impact damage, fire, theft, earthquake etc. In addition to this, it provides cover against any third party liability in term of death, bodily injury and third party property damage. However, third party liability, which is the mandatory cover protects your vehicle against third party liability against person and property.
Comprehensive two wheeler insurance provides overall protection to your vehicle by providing coverage against loss due to unforeseen events like floods, earthquakes, riots, theft, burglary, fire, etc. Comprehensive two-wheeler policy also encompasses your legal liabilities towards the third party during an accident. It covers both the property damage, loss of vehicle, damage of vehicle parts liabilities of the third party and physical injuries or death of the third party caused by the insured vehicle during an accident. No, it is not mandatory to have a comprehensive bike insurance policy. According to Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is compulsorily to ride any vehicle with a valid third party insurance policy. However, it is advisable to have a comprehensive two wheeler insurance policy to get full fledge coverage for your vehicle. Also comprehensive bike insurance policy comes along with the benefits provided by third party two wheeler insurance in addition to coverages for theft, fire, natural calamity and other unforeseen events.
Zero depreciation is an add-on cover and has to be purchased by paying additional premium. It offers complete coverage to your two wheeler without factoring into depreciation. For instance, if your vehicle is badly damaged, then you don’t need to pay for any depreciation charge and will be eligible for full claim amount subject to terms and conditions of the policy. Applicable for 1 year policy.
Emergency assistance is an add-on cover and has to be purchased by paying additional premium. It has multiple benefits like breakdown assistance, tyre replacement, towing, fuel replacement etc which can be availed during the policy duration. Customers need to call up the customer care number mentioned on the policy for availing these benefits. Applicable for 1 year policy.
You can easily renew your expired policy online. No inspection is required and you may simply buy the policy online. Once the payment is made, you will receive the policy copy.

This add-on cover retains your No Claim Bonus even after you have raised a claim for damage caused to your parked vehicle due to external impact or any calamity such as flood, fire etc. This cover not only protects your NCB earned so far, but also takes it to the next NCB slab. It can be claimed for a maximum of 3 times during the policy period.
The Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum amount of sum assured fixed by the insurance company, according to the present market value of the vehicle. Sometimes, the overall repair cost exceeds 75% of the vehicle’s IDV,and then, the insured bike is treated as a Constructive Total Loss claim.
Roadside assistance is an add-on cover that comes to your rescue when you are stranded on the road in case of a mechanical breakdown. This has to be purchased by paying additional premium. One can avail 24*7 road side assistance for breakdown, tyre replacement, towing, fuel replacement etc. by contacting the customer care.
When a policyholder doesn’t make any claims during the policy period, he/she is rewarded with a No Claim Bonus (NCB). Now, this discount can range from 15% to 50%, depending upon your track record of not making a claim. While making a claim for massive damages serves the whole purpose of taking insurance, if you let go of small damages, you can avail a decent discount in the form of NCB. So, it’s advisable to pay for minor repairs instead of making a claim and losing that NCB, which by the way, only increases with every passing year.
