8 Tips for Choosing the Right Protective Cap or Bike Helmet - Bike insurance

Cruising on a two-wheeler is a fun and liberating experience or many. However, motorbikes may be difficult to balance at times and the probability of hitting the ground and injuring the head is high. As a brain injury may have life-changing consequences, it is important to wear a helmet to guard your head against unforeseen situations. Also, make sure you have two-wheeler insurance  that provides financial protection to your bike against any damage. If you are looking for broader coverage, a comprehensive bike insurance policy is just right. It covers third party liability, personal accident, natural calamities, fire, theft, and so on.

Why wear a helmet?

  • A helmet is the most important protective gear for bikers

  • It guards your head in the event of an accident and averts fatal injuries

  • Wearing a helmet is mandatory in India and not complying with the law is a punishable offence. If you are caught driving without a helmet, you will attract a penalty of INR 1000, license suspension or 3-month community service.

How to choose a bike helmet?

Here are some points to keep in mind while shopping for a protective cap or helmet.

  • Shape and size: The shape and size of everyone’s head is different. Hence, choose a helmet that best fits your head to stay comfortable while riding a bike. As different types of helmets are available in the market, make sure you try out a few and pick one, which is sturdy and comfortable.

  • Identify the correct fit: While looking for a protective helmet, remember to select the right fit. A simple way to identify the right fit is that the helmet should feel a little tight when worn. The inner padding should lightly press the maximum part of your head and cheeks. While the fit should be tight, make sure it is comfortable and does not cause any pain.

  • Strap and buckle type matter: Check the strap and buckle type before making a purchase. For this, you should try out the different types and select one that has a safe strapping and easy-to-operate buckle. Helmets with the “Double D” ring system buckle type are preferred by many.

  • Check visibility:  When you are purchasing a helmet, make sure the upper edge of its opening is a little above your eyebrows. Your helmet should also have enough transparent area on both sides for easy peripheral vision.

  • Visor:  Choose one with high-quality and scratch-resistant visor. As visors have clear as well as tinted shades, you can try a few and select the most comfortable one. Many bikers prefer UV protection visors for better protection and visibility.

  • Ventilation:  Choose a helmet with multiple ventilation points to stay comfortable on warmer days. Some also come with an open-shut mechanism for different weather conditions. Apart from the intake vents, premium helmets also have exhaust openings for easy air circulation.

  • Material:  Go for helmets made of fibre-glass composites, or carbon composites and Kevlar. The interior should be cushioned and the air mesh should keep the insides dry and clean.

  • Weight:  The weight of the helmet should be distributed evenly to prevent any strain on your head and shoulders.

Conclusion

Selecting the right helmet is imperative for safety and comfort reasons. You can also wear a headgear under it to prevent sweat accumulation. Apart from wearing a helmet, it is also mandatory to have a two-wheeler insurance policy to drive a bike in India. The insurance will like your helmet offer protection  to you in unforeseen circumstances like accidents.
