Novel Coronavirus: Precaution at Home and Office

As of Thursday,India had 30 confirmed cases of Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19). While the spectrum of its seriousness ranges from mild fever followed by recovery to death,it is always better to be prepared for this virus that is present on every continent today, except Antarctica.

Currently, there is no vaccine for Covid-19 and the overburdened Indian healthcare system is trying its best to curb the impact of the virus with government intervention and the participation of private hospitals as well.

The Role of Health Insurance

Though the government is taking measures to control the virus and prevent it from spreading,it is understandable that everybody wants to be cautious and consult a doctor if they see the symptoms of Novel Coronavirus. But the cost of testing and other hospital expenses can add up fairly quickly.

At a time when you’re concerned about your health and that of your loved ones, the one thing you shouldn’t have to be concerned about is the cost of medical care. A comprehensive health insurance policy can help you bear these costs without breaking the bank. The good news is that IRDAI has now instructed insurance companies to structure their policies to grant financial relief to those affected by Covid-19 and cover the treatment cost.

Symptoms

Here are some of the most common symptoms.

  • Bearing a striking resemblance to the common flu,Covid-19’s symptoms may surface between 2 days to 2 weeks of exposure and reports state that it affects the elderly or those with a compromised immune system much easily.

  • Sniffles, fatigue, common cold, dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever are some of the most common symptoms.

Precautions and Prevention

While the chances of contracting the infection are present in the air, here are some practices you can adopt to lower the chances of getting Covid-19. There is a difference in the way you approach preventive measures at home and at your office.

At Office

Thousands of employees in Hyderabad based organisationswere asked to work from home as two employees tested positive for the virus.

This is a great preventive measure as the office environment can become a hot pocket of viral activity amidst the enclosure where air conditioned air is circulated without much ventilation.

While working from home is the best option, there are other precautions you can take if you must work in a crowded office.Wash your hands as often as possible, keep your computer equipment tidy by cleaning it with a dab of alcohol, greet people with a namaste rather than shaking hands, wear a mask and keep distance from anyone who seems under the weather.

Avoid sharing food or water with your co-workersas there is a good chance you might contract the lurking virus.

At Home

Although your home is the safest environment to be in,here are a few simple tips your can practise:

  • Every time you venture out and come back home, wash your hands and face with a disinfectant soap.

  • Wash the utensils and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.

  • Discourage relatives and friends from visiting and maintain other basic hygiene strictly to keep yourself safe from Covid-19

Consulting Your Doctor

The general rule of thumb is“awareness, precaution, preparation and no panic” but if anyone around you shows any signs of the aforementioned symptoms, head to the nearest hospital or see a physician immediately as Covid-19 has a tendency of lurking in a human body for up to 2 weeks without showing symptoms. It is also advisable that everyone around the sick person is tested as well.

While the news is serious,it pays not to panic in such situations. It is best to build up your immunity by exercising and eating healthy, and minimise your contact with any third party.

Stay safe!
