Why medical test is important while buying a health cover?

When you go out to buy a medical insurance policy, many reputed insurance providers ask you to undergo some tests. These pre-medical tests are mandatory for you to get health insurance as they are a huge deciding factor in determining your eligibility for insurance. It does not mean however that you cannot get a policy without medical tests and it is fairly easy to fall for the health insurance with no medical exam. It might sound like a valuable proposition most of the times. But the truth is, the insurer that asks you to go for health insurance exam is most customer friendly at the time of making a claim.

It should however be noted that even if the insurance provider has not asked you to go through these tests, it nowhere implies that you should withhold a pre-existing health condition. Lying about your ailments or hiding facts is considered fraud and may lead to rejection of claim. So, in case of no medical tests, one needs to submit a declaration of good health before your insurer decides your premium amount.

Skipping the tests may seem like a good idea. It saves you the trouble of visiting a diagnostic centre and saves your money. But, it may lead you to pay heavily later. So, if you are a healthy individual, going for health insurance medical check-up will be all the more beneficial for you. If you pass these tests without any ailments being diagnosed, the insurer will reimburse you for the health check up in case the proposal is accepted. And in case you have a pre-existing condition, you will get to know in detail about exclusions and waiting periods pertaining to your condition. Though it might lead you to pay a slightly higher premium, it is worth it at the end. Remember, it is better to pay a higher premium and get covered rather than saving a few pennies today and getting your claim rejected later.

Another reason to go through these health check-ups is because many people themselves are not aware of their health condition. After the tests, the responsibility of being aware of existing condition is now transferred to the insurance provider, hence freeing the person from the obligation of declaration of good health.

Another thing to note here is that no medical tests is a marketing gimmick. Medical exams are never light on the pocket, and hence when the customer has to incur the expense, it hampers the customer’s acquisition.

Medical tests vary from company to company. HDFC Ergo provides health insurance plans that cover the cost of these tests at the later stage.

Always remember, the more transparent you are while giving your information, the easier and hassle free will be your claim settlement.
