Independence Day: Let Us Fight for Our Freedom from Covid-19

Freedom always comes at a price, and India too had to pay a big one when it broke the shackles of British rule. Many freedom fighters sacrificed their very lives to give us a beautiful country where we can live with our heads held high. However, today, once again, our freedom is threatened by the novel coronavirus. Not only did the pandemic take away the lives of our near and dear ones, but it has also forced us to give up small freedoms that we took for granted. We cannot venture outside unless necessary, socialise, travel or simply be ourselves. So, to fight this battle against Covid-19 and live free once again, we must practise a high standard of hygiene, get vaccinated at the earliest, and buy the best health insurance plan in India.

Simple steps to protect yourself against COVID-19

  1. Practice good hand hygiene: It is important to wash hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water for atleast 20 seconds or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before touching anything (literally anything!), more so, if you are in a public place. We use our hands to touch surfaces and objects that may be contaminated and maintaining good hand hygiene will kill the germs and viruses on our hands. Some simple and effective ways to practice hand hygiene: wash your hands before touching your nose, hands and mouth, before eating or cooking, after using your mask, after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose, after using the washroom, after returning from outside, after petting animals, etc.

2. Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hand: Not just you, but also the people around you should follow good respiratory hygiene. By this, we mean, use a tissue or the inside of your elbow when you sneeze or cough. Then, discard the used tissue into a closed bin and wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

3. Stay home if you are sick: If you feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as slight fever, headache, or cough, stay at home and self-isolate until you recover. This will prevent the spread of virus and you will also recover fast.

4. Avoid crowded places and close contact with anyone who has fever or cough: There is a high risk of getting infected with Covid-19 in crowded places like shopping malls, restaurants, fitness centres, movie theatres, places of worship due to close proximity to others. Similarly, indoor and poorly ventilated spaces are also high-risk. In such places, the virus spreads quickly. Maintain a distance of atleast 6 feet from anyone who has fever, cough or any other respiratory disease.

5. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early: Mild symptoms can be treated by staying at home in self-isolation. But severe symptoms like high fever, cough and difficulty in breathing will require medical attention. Contact a hospital or health care provider first so that they can quickly direct you to the right health facility, and thus, protect you as well as control the spread of the virus.

6. Get your vaccine: Now that Covid-19 vaccines are available, take one as soon as possible. This may help curb the spread of the virus. However, vaccine is not a sure shot cure for Covid-19, so you need to follow all the above-mentioned steps to protect yourself and others.

Importance of Buying/Renewing Your health Insurance

As per the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), all general and health insurance companies need to mandatorily cover coronavirus in the existing health plans. The IRDAI has also directed insurance companies to offer corona-specific health policies such as Corona Kavach and Corona Rakshak. So, now, the best health insurance plan in India will cover all Covid-related expenses such as hospitalisation, pre-post hospitalisation, home care treatment and AYUSH treatment if the policyholder tests positive.

If you don’t have any health insurance policy, you can purchase one, but you must be aware of two things. One, the policy will not cover the expenses if you have already tested positive while buying the same. Second, there is a waiting period after which you can file a claim for coronovirus. Hence, check with your insurance provider about the same.

Conclusion

We have been fighting the deadly virus for close to two years now and millions of lives have been lost worldwide. But let us keep the fight on by following all safety precautions like maintaining good hand hygiene, social distancing, wearing masks, staying at home and getting vaccinated. Also, make sure all Covid-related expenses are covered by your health plans. If you don’t have one, buy the best health insurance plan in India  and avail quality care without worrying about hospital bills.
