Plan of action – if your parked car got hit

Published on June 22, 2020. EST READ TIME: 5 MIN

There can be two scenarios in case your parked car gets hit:

  • Someone hits your parked car and flees the scene without leaving behind any contact details

    • This will be considered as a hit and run case, find out if there were any witnesses nearby who can identify the offender or if there are security cameras that have captured the accident.

    • Take details of the witnesses if they are ready to testify against the offender or take footage from the security camera operators from the scene of the accident.

  • Someone hits your parked car but is ready to resolve the issue and face the consequences

  • Take down the details of the person who has caused the damage, and ask him to accompany you to the nearest police station if possible.

Here are some steps you should take in either of the above scenarios:

  • Ensure you take ample photographs of the accident site and the damage sustained by your car. This will help you with filing a claim as well as in the investigation of the accident.

  • Report the incident at the nearest police station and file an FIR,ensure you take a copy of the FIR to be submitted while making a claim

  • Inform your insurance provider and raise a claim to cover the financial losses due to the damage sustained.

  • And last but not the least it is important to remain calm and not panic in a situation like this, think on your feet and follow the above suggestions also ensure your car remains protected with car insurance and ‘own damage cover’ in particular.

What is ‘Own Damage Cover’ and why is it important?

Own Damage Cover helps cover financial losses to the insured car, arising due to theft, accidents, fire and explosion or natural calamities. It is a component of the comprehensive car insurance plan as well as a standalone own damage plan. It is very important to opt for it considering that accidents are unforeseen and are accompanied by major damages and heavy losses. The mandatory third-party car insurance covers financial losses of the insured vehicle arising out of damages to the third party but does not include own damage cover.

A car is not just an automobile for most car owners, you invest your money as well as emotions when you buy a car. And it is only logical to cover it with a holistic insurance plan that helps you leave behind worries about the safety of your car.
