4 Steps for Availing Continuous Benefit of Car Insurance When Moving To Other State

Moving out from our existing state to a new place is a tedious task, while you are deeply engaged in transferring and making arrangements to transfer and establish your base in a new state, there are several other things as well that needs serious consideration. For example, transferring your vehicle registration and ensure you re register your vehicle at the new state. Failing to do so may lead to legal troubles and exorbitant penalties charges by the traffic police or local RTO.

How to go about it?

You don’t really have to look for brand new car insurance or hunt for multi-state car insurance when moving out of your existing state. Most of the coverage offered by insurance companies remains the same throughout India. If you have car insurance from another state, firstly you have to re-register your vehicle at the local RTO within 30-90 days of shifting. So the answer to the commonly asked question does car insurance transfer from state to state? Is yes, car insurance requires transfer from state to state, as every state abides by different rules regulations and policies to govern the motor traffic and regulatory.

Steps to transfer registration from one state to another in India?

  • Obtain NOC (No objection certificate from existing RTO) informing about your transfer.

  • If you’re paying loan EMI for your vehicle, get a NOC from your bank.

  • Once you get the NOC’s you have to submit the below mentioned documents and declaration to the existing RTO office for initiating the transfer

  • Application requesting for NOC for interstate transfer.

  • Certificate of registration, insurance, tax, Pollution under control (emission test certificate)

  • Original Chassis Imprint of the vehicle

  • 3-4 Copies of CMV Form 28

  • You may also obtain and attach the no objection certificate from the police to speed up the process. Or else the RTO will give you a clearance form that you can get signed from the police department.

  • NOC from traffic police that there is no due of any fine for traffic violation etc.

Post receiving all types of clearances, you can now drive your vehicle or transfer it to another state smoothly. Once your vehicle reaches the new state, you once again have to re-register your vehicle with the new location RTO by providing all the transfer documents along with the main documents such as:

  • Form 29-30 for re-registration of the number.

  • Original RC copy

  • Copy of Insurance of the car.

  • Copy of the NOC you obtained in previous steps.

  • Pollution under control /emission test certificate

  • Original Chassis Imprint of the vehicle.

  • Photo id and local address proof of the owner of the vehicle.

  • Applicable fees like road tax charges.

Is car insurance required in all states or can you get car insurance in a different state?

Generally, car insurance coverage and benefits are same within the national boundaries. A policy purchased in Mumbai will give the same benefits in Delhi. However, there could be a lot of change in documents and detail updating which needs to be done by the vehicle owner post shifting to a different state or city in India. Moving out of a state does not require compulsory switching your car insurance policy; you can always continue your policy by intimating your insurance company about the transfer.

Since, you receive a new registration number when your car is re-registered in a new city. It is advisable to intimate your Insurance Company about the change of registration no, address & contact details. This helps the insurance company service you better in case of any accident you report and in case of a zone change you might have pay the differential premium amount. There won’t be coverage gap, however you can definitely upgrade your cover if you feel your new city is probable to accidents or may require better coverage.
