Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is your essential shield against unexpected expenses while travelling abroad. It provides financial protection in case the insured (i.e., the people covered under the plan) suffer a medical emergency or face any issues that might result in financial loss.

Travel insurance is not only helpful but also mandatory in several countries, including in 29 Schengen countries (Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and 24+ countries). It is also mandatory in other countries, such as Turkey and Cuba.[12][13][14][15]

Dealing with a health emergency or losing essential items overseas can not only derail your trip but also drain your wallet. Healthcare costs in foreign countries are often sky-high. That’s why choosing the right travel insurance policy is more than a formality; it’s a necessity. [1]

The right travel insurance policy will cover:
  • • Emergency medical expenses abroad
  • • Hospitalisation & medical evacuation
  • • Dental treatments
  • • Personal accident cover
  • • Loss of passport or international driving licence
  • • Delayed or lost baggage
  • • Trip delay and cancellation
  • • Delayed or cancelled flights
  • • Hijack distress allowance
  • • Personal liability cover, and more.

You can buy travel insurance from India and opt for international travel insurance online to ensure peace of mind, no matter where you are.

Plus, with the latest GST reforms effective September 22, 2025, international travel insurance plans in India now come with 0% GST, making this crucial protection more affordable than ever.[2]

Why Do You Need an Overseas Travel Insurance Policy?

With HDFC ERGO’s Travel Insurance policy, you can explore the world without second thoughts. We provide coverage for untimely expenses that might occur during your journey, such as losing luggage, missing out on a connecting flight, or the risk of getting infected by COVID-19.

Hence, instead of paying out of pocket for unpleasant surprises that can cost thousands abroad, it is recommended to buy a comprehensive international travel insurance plan.

Here are some reasons, backed up by facts and figures, which emphasise the need for travel insurance:

  • Studies show that 43-79% of travellers fall ill when travelling to specific countries. By getting trip health insurance coverage in case of such a situation, you can ensure your travel plans stay on track. [3]

  • According to the SITA Baggage Insights Report, around 33.4 million bags were mishandled in 2024. If your baggage suffers such an event and is delayed/lost, you get compensation for baggage loss to help you settle in quickly. [8]

  • Lost passports are also a frequent issue for Indian travellers overseas. With travel insurance, you get support for replacing documents and compensation for baggage loss, helping you settle in quickly.

  • Delays are becoming more common each year, with over 9.5 lakh Indian passengers being affected in the first three months of 2024 alone. [9] Delays can lead to additional meal, hotel, or rebooking costs. Travel insurance steps in to reimburse these unexpected expenses, so disruptions don’t derail your plans.

  • Treatment costs for dental issues abroad can be significantly higher than in India. Your travel insurance helps manage these costs when sudden dental pain or injury interrupts your trip.

International flights are five times more likely to result in lost luggage than domestic ones. Protect your belongings with travel insurance.

How to Choose the Best Travel Insurance Plan?

To have the best travel experience, it is important to choose the best travel insurance planthat meets your needs. Here’s a guide to help you

Start by understanding which category suits your travel needs: single-trip, multi-trip, studenttravel, senior travel, or family plans. Selecting the correct plan type ensures you get relevant benefits from the start

Medical emergencies abroad can be expensive. Review the medical insurance limit, emergency evacuation coverage, and hospitalisation benefits to ensure they match the healthcare costs of your destination.

If you’re travelling to a country that is safer or economically more stable, the insurancepremium will likely be lower.

The longer your trip, the higher the insurance premium will be. This is because the riskinvolved in a longer trip is higher. Always pick a plan that covers the entire duration, including transit time

A higher sum insured amount means stronger protection, but it also leads to a higherpremium. Choose an amount that gives you peace of mind without overspending.

Pick a plan where you can extend or renew your travel insurance whenever it’s about toexpire. Refer policy document for more details.

Older travellers may higher medical limits and specialised benefits. This is because theprobability of medical emergencies increases with age. Confirm that the plan offers senior-friendly coverage at reasonable premiums

If any traveller has a known medical condition, check how the policy handles PEDs and whether the chosen plan offers coverage.

Understand what is not covered, such as travel without valid visas, overstaying, intoxication-related claims, and war-related risks

Look for insurers offering 24/7 global assistance, fast claim settlement, and a high number ofcashless hospital networks. Good assistance can make a big difference during emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions on Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a protection plan you can buy online that safeguards your travel plans against unexpected mishaps. It acts as a safety net, offering financial backup and peace of mind when you’re away from home. Travel Insurance policy usually includes:

• Medical care & hospitalization abroad

• Trip delays, cancellations, or missed connections

• Lost or stolen baggage & documents • Personal Accident & Liability cover

• Emergency evacuation support Many countries even require you to have a valid travel insurance plan as a part of their visa process.

Choosing the best travel insurance policy ensures your journey stays memorable for all the right reasons - with complete protection, not costly surprises.

We have good news for you here. A medical checkup is not necessary if you’re planning to buy the HDFC ERGO travel insurance policy. You can bid goodbye to health checkups and purchase travel insurance without any hassle.

Yes, you most certainly can buy travel insurance after you’ve made a booking for your trip. In fact, it’s a smart idea to do so, because that way, you will have a better idea of the details of your trip, such as the start date, the end date, the number of people accompanying you and the destination. These details are all essential to determine the cost of your travel insurance cover.

Travel insurance is mandatory for traveling to all 26 Schengen countries.

No. HDFC ERGO does not provide multiple insurance plans to the same person for the same trip.

Policy can be taken only if the insured is in India. Cover is not offered for individuals who have already travelled abroad.

Travel insurance acts as a financial safety net and protects you against the possible financial repercussions of unexpected emergencies on your journey. When you purchase a travel insurance policy, you essentially buy a cover against certain insurable events. It offers medical, baggage-related and journey-related coverage.
In case any of the insured events, like flight delays, loss of baggage, or medical emergencies occur, your insurer will either reimburse the additional costs that you incur on account of such incidents, or they shall offer a cashless claim settlement for the same.

Emergency medical needs must be treated in time if the need arises. And that is why it is not necessary to get any sort of prior approval from the insurer before you proceed with medical treatment, but it is better to inform the insurance company of the claim. However, the nature of the treatment and the terms of the travel insurance policy will determine if the treatment is covered by the travel insurance.

Well, that depends on where you’re travelling to. To be more specific, there are 34 countries that have made travel insurance mandatory, so you’ll need to purchase a cover before you travel there. These countries include Cuba, The United States of America, The United Arab of Emirates, Ecuador, Antarctica, Qatar, Russia, Turkey and the group of 26 Schengen countries.

The exact age criteria vary from one travel insurance policy to another, and also from oneinsurer to the next. For the travel insurance policy from HDFC ERGO, the age criteria dependon the kind of cover you opt for

• For annual multi trip insurance, people aged between 18 and 70 years can be insured.
• For family floater insurance, which covers the policyholder and up to 18 other immediate family members, the minimum age of entry is 91 days and can be insured up to 70 years.

That depends on the number of trips you’ll be taking during the year. If you’ll likely just take the one trip, you will want to purchase a single trip cover. The ideal time to buy a travel policy for a single trip is within a couple of weeks of booking your flight tickets. On the other hand, if you plan to take multiple trips during the year, it would be a better idea to purchase your travel insurance plan well in advance, before you book your various trips.
