Do You Have Enough Health Insurance?

Most of us feel we do not need a health insurance plan until we land up in a hospital. And that is when we realize the burden of ever-increasing medical expenses. A few days in a hospital for a medical procedure can easily eat up all of your savings. What should you do to avoid such a situation? Buy a health insurance plan.

A health insurance plan is an insurance that helps you cover completely or partially the medical or surgical expenses. As is the case with any insurance, it is an agreement between you and your insurer, where you pay premiums annually and in return, the insurer offers coverage against medical or surgical expenses.

You can buy either a basic health insurance plan or a super top-up plan in India. As the name suggests, the basic health insurance plan offers coverage against surgical treatments, accidents, day procedures, critical illnesses and so on. The only limitation is the sum assured.

The super top-up plan offers supplemental coverage for the basic health insurance plan. It will help you increase the sum assured of your basic health insurance plan too.

Coverage

Here are some of the basic coverage that you get with a standard health insurance plan.

  • Day Care Procedure

Medical expenses related to procedures that do not require hospitalization or are of less than 24 hours.

  • Pre-Hospitalization

The expenses related to medical treatment/procedure of an individual prior to hospitalization. The allowed duration would vary depending on the insurer.

  • Post-Hospitalization

The expenses related to medical treatment/procedure of an individual post hospitalization. The allowed duration would vary depending on the insurer.

  • In Patient

If a policyholder is admitted to a hospital and the admission exceeds 24 hours, expenses related to the admit either due to illness or accident would be covered as a part of the health plan.

  • Home Treatment

Most insurers offer coverage for expenses related to treatment at home, which would generally require hospitalization.

  • Ambulance Service

If you take the help of ambulance services to reach the hospital, a health insurance plan would usually cover the same. It includes air ambulance expenses as well.

  • AYUSH treatment

If you prefer treatment via Ayurveda, Unani, Sidha or Homeopathy, you can claim the expenses as a part of your health plan.

  • Other Benefits

Some insurers might offer free health checkups at regular intervals, cover some pre-existing diseases, offer coverage for maternity and so on.

Right Coverage

Once you decide to buy a health insurance plan, the next big step is deciding the apt coverage for you or your family. You must consider several aspects before you can decide the right coverage. For starters, a higher coverage would warrant higher premiums. But at the same time, you would need to consider the amount of money you are likely to spend on medical expenses.

If it is on the higher side, a plan with better coverage is recommended. The age of the members of the plan and your family history when it comes to health would also play a crucial role in deciding the right coverage. Read more to know Why Employer's Health Insurance isn't enough?
