How to Register Vehicles at RTO Surat

    A vehicle must be registered with RTO Surat under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 before it may be utilised for regional public transit.

    Step 1: Visit the official website at https://cot.gujarat.gov.in/vehicle-registration.htm.

    step 2: Choose "Apply Now".

    step 3: Fill out the application form on your screen completely.

    step 4: Print the application form after all the information has been filled in, and then take it to your neighbourhood RTO with the relevant paperwork.

List of documents required for Vehicle Registration at Surat RTO

    Before arranging the following documents for successful vehicle registration at RTO Surat, buy a motor insurance policy for your vehicle. A copy of your vehicle’s insurance policy is necessary before going for registration.

    • Form 20: The Application

    • Form 21 Sale certificate from the seller

    • Form 22: Information about roadworthiness and compliance with pollution and safety standards

    • Form 22A: Similar to Form 22 for vehicles whose parts have been fabricated separately

    • Temporary registration certificate, if any

    • As per the Supreme Court's order, it is now mandatory for people buying a car to purchase a third party car insurance with a three-year policy tenure. On the other hand, a 5-year third party bike insurance policy is compulsory for new two-wheeler registration. However, suppose a bike owner opts for a comprehensive two wheeler insurance policy, we offer package cover with one year of own damage and five years of third party cover. If a person opts for a comprehensive car insurance policy for a private car, we offer a bundled policy of one year of own damage and three years of third-party cover.

Functions of Surat RTO

RTO Surat’s primary function is to ensure that the public strictly follows the laws and regulations prescribed under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. In addition, RTO Surat has the important function of enforcing the Motor Vehicles Act. RTOs are significant in the city's smooth transportation and other traffic-related services. It ensures that every vehicle plying on the roads of Surat is registered with it and every driver driving the vehicle has obtained a valid driving licence. RTO Surat also provides other functions, which are listed as follows:

Revenue Collection
All vehicles must pay a government-imposed road tax for several different car types. The size and kind of vehicle affect the tax rates. The relevant RTO for that area is in charge of it. RTO Surat also collects payments for International Multipurpose Vehicles cases requiring departmental intervention to incur additional costs.

Vehicle Registration
The RTO Surat handles vehicle registration. In addition, it issues NOCs and transportation licences. A NOC is necessary when transferring a vehicle's registration from one RTO to another state's RTO. In addition, whenever a car is sold in Surat, RTO Surat updates the vehicle's registration with the new owner.

Issuing Licenses

Surat RTO is responsible for collecting road tax, a significant revenue source for the government to maintain the necessary infrastructure for the public. It also collects certain fees, such as Inspector Motor Vehicle, for conducting any department's action cases.

Providing permits
If you want to travel from Surat to another state and vice versa, you would have to take a permit from the respective RTOs. RTO Surat issues various other permits such as stage carrier permits, special permits, permits for professional driving instructions, school buses, commercial vehicles, tour vehicles, etc. RTO also issues National permits to commercial goods carrying vehicles from one state to another, passenger-carrying vehicles like taxis, rental cabs, radio taxis, etc. and all India tourist permits.

of every month or part thereof regarding motorcycles
and ₹500 for delay of every month or part
thereof regarding other classes of non-transport
vehicles shall be levied.

Frequently Asked Questions on RTO Surat

Your RC should ideally arrive at your door within 7 days. However, you can enter your registration number at parivahan.gov.in and check the status of your RC.
The time it takes to register a vehicle ranges from 5 to 15 working days. Therefore, the applicant might expect to obtain the RC within a week to a month from registration.
There are three RTOs in Surat, ARTO Surat (Pal) GJ28, RTO Surat GJ05 and RTO Bardoli GJ19.
You can register in Surat RTO after buying a car in Vadodara. To re-Register your vehicle in Surat, you must first secure a NOC from the RTO where it is currently registered, then apply for a road tax refund from Vadodara. After submitting the necessary documents, you will get RC within 15 days.
You can apply for a duplicate license by filling out form LLD and attaching a photocopy of your Indian driving permit, a copy of the FIR, medical certificates, Form 1 and Form 1A, and documentation proving your age and address. A fee of Rs. 200 is applicable.
