Since January 2025, the number of COVID-19 cases in the world (especially in the USA, UK, and Asia) has gone up in significant numbers. A new variant, NB.1.8.1 commonly known as “Nimbus”, has been identified as the major reason for the surge in these infections. Originating from the Omicron virus, it causes symptoms similar to that caused by the variant spread during the 2020 COVID pandemic.
Sore throat, loss of sense of smell & taste, fatigue, cough, fever, nasal congestion, nausea, and headache are the main symptoms. However, in rare cases, it could also induce a new symptom known as the “razor blade throat”. This condition causes patients to experience intense throat pain, often described as the sensation of swallowing pieces of glass. As a result, routine activities like eating and drinking become extremely difficult.
The WHO has given a comforting message that Nimbus is not associated with any severe global public health risks. Experts have also advised against panic as the COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters have the potential to combat infections from this Variant in symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.
