UN Cybercrime Treaty to Be Signed in Hanoi

In a major step for global digital governance the United Nations will open the signing of a new cybercrime convention in Hanoi, Vietnam, with around 60 nations expected to participate. The treaty aims to enhance collaboration across borders, streamline investigations of crimes such as ransomware, phishing and online trafficking and support legal assistance when offenders exploit jurisdictional gaps.

The convention will take effect once ratified by 40 countries. But while the push addresses a rising tide of cyber-offences it draws sharp critique. Major technology firms and human rights groups warn the treaty’s broad definitions risk criminalising ethical hackers and enabling unchecked government surveillance.

Vietnam’s role as host also raises concern given its record on online freedom and expression.
