Microsoft is developing MAI-1, an in-house AI language model under the oversight of Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind. Larger than previous models, MAI-1 aims to compete with Google and OpenAI. Its exact purpose is undetermined, awaiting performance evaluation. Microsoft may preview MAI-1 at its upcoming Build conference. The move reflects Microsoft's strategic ambition to advance in the generative AI race, leveraging investments in OpenAI and recent hires from AI startup Inflection. While MAI-1's parameters are expected to exceed 500 billion, rival models like OpenAI's GPT-4 boast one trillion parameters. Microsoft's Phi-3-mini, launched recently, targets cost-effectiveness to widen its client base. The initiative underscores Microsoft's commitment to AI innovation, backed by significant investments and infrastructure enhancements, including clusters of Nvidia GPU-equipped servers. While MAI-1 may leverage training data from Inflection, it represents a new endeavor in Microsoft's pursuit of AI excellence.
