Indian car maker Mahindra is pursuing a bold dual-platform hybrid strategy, exploring hybrid technology for both its standard internal combustion engine (ICE) and BEV platforms. For ICEs, the company plans to introduce regular series-hybrid technology. At the same time, its BEV lineup may adopt range-extender hybrid powertrains featuring a 1.2-litre gas engine that works solely as a battery generator.
The XUV 3XO small SUV is being studied for a series-parallel hybrid system, which would match its current 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with a strong hybrid setup. This arrangement allows the combustion engine and electric motor to work together or separately, thereby improving fuel economy.
The strategy shift reflects market realities, as Mahindra sold only 2,604 EVs in May 2025, falling short of its monthly goal of 5,000 units. With hybrids capturing a 2.1% market share (85,000 units) versus EVs' 2.4% share in 2024, and government subsidies now supporting hybrid adoption, Mahindra's dual hybrid approach positions the brand to capitalise on India's evolving automobile landscape.
