Common Symptoms of Eclampsia During Pregnancy and Postpartum

Eclampsia is a serious health issue that a pregnant woman or a woman in her postpartum phase may face. The condition is marked by occurrences or symptoms such as seizures, loss of consciousness, powerful muscular contractions, severe headache, twitching of facial muscles, confusion, restlessness, etc. Eclampsia is preceded by preeclampsia, a condition in which the pregnant woman may manifest unusually high blood pressure and may pass protein in their urine. What causes this blood pressure elevation is not clear, but doctors and researchers believe that an abnormality in the placental development can trigger the release of toxic chemicals into the mother’s bloodstream. This results in elevated blood pressure, protein in the urine, and various other eclampsia symptoms.

Read on to understand the various symptoms associated with eclampsia.

Understanding the Symptoms of Eclampsia

The most common eclampsia symptoms include:

• Seizures:

One of the major symptoms of eclampsia is seizures. The affected woman may experience fits or convulsions as a result of eclampsia-related seizures.

• Unconsciousness:

The woman may turn unconscious if eclampsia occurs.

• Agitation:

The woman having eclampsia may become severely agitated, manifesting high levels of restlessness and confusion.

• Vigorous Muscular Contractions:

During the episode of seizures, the woman may experience powerful contractions and relaxations of muscles all over the body.

• Foam from Mouth:

Many women suffering from eclampsia may get foam in their mouth during the seizures.

• Facial Twitching:

Facial twitching is also a symptom of eclampsia, which is associated with seizures.

• Severe Headache:

Severe headache is another common symptom associated with eclampsia. The affected woman may also experience nausea and vomiting.

Conclusion

Eclampsia is a medical emergency and should not be ignored. Though rare, it can prove fatal for both the mother and the baby. Therefore, doctors need to be alert if they notice any sign of eclampsia in a pregnant woman. Like eclampsia, there may be several other health-related emergencies during pregnancy and delivery. The treatments for these are mostly expensive. Therefore, it is worth having a comprehensive health insurance plan with maternity benefits to cover pregnancy-related costs.
