Home Remedies to Cure Dandruff Naturally

Dealing with dandruff can seem a bit icky because of the white flakes on the scalp. People consider dandruff as a mild problem, but the prolonged itchiness on the scalp can trigger temporary hair loss. Irrespective of age and gender, it can happen to anyone because of dry skin, sensitivity to hair products, etc. Dandruff is caused by a fungus, Malassezia, which grows over time on the scalp by feeding on sebum produced by the sebaceous gland. While there are several over-the-counter (OTC) products available which can help treat dandruff, below mentioned home remedies may be just as effective.

1. Tea tree oil

Because of its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree oil can help alleviate the symptoms of dandruff. The best way to use tea tree oil is by diluting it with a few drops of coconut or jojoba oil.

2. Coconut oil with lemon

The combination of coconut oil and lemon is an ancient remedy for curing dandruff. Massage the mixture on your scalp and leave it for 10-15 minutes, then rinse the hair.

3. Apple cider vinegar

Diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) can help balance the scalp's pH and combat the Malassezia fungus. Mix equal parts ACV and water, apply it to your scalp after shampooing, and leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing.

4. Neem

Neem has always been a part of every treatment of fungal and bacterial problems. You can rinse your hair with it by boiling a few leaves of neem and cooling it down to avoid dandruff. You can also apply neem paste or oil to your scalp.

5. Aloe vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties that clear out dandruff and flakiness from the scalp. After applying aloe vera gel, leave the scalp for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

6. Omega-3s

Few researches suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce inflammation which in turn can relieve irritation and dandruff symptoms. Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acid in your diet such as fish, chia seeds, and walnuts. You can also take fish oil supplement to help increase your intake.

7. Baking soda

Using baking soda is a quick, convenient, and readily available dandruff remedy. While it may act as a gentle exfoliant and help remove dead skin cells and reduce itchiness, it also has antifungal properties that may benefit dandruff treatment. For best results, apply baking soda directly to wet hair and massage it into your scalp. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes, and then continue shampooing your hair as usual.

8. Avoid Certain Foods

Limiting or avoiding consumption of certain foods could help relieve inflammation, which might in turn help improve scalp health. Dietary modifications may prevent fungal infection, which may aid in treatment of dandruff. Foods that you may want to avoid are:

• refined carbs, like white bread, pasta, and crackers

• red meat

• processed & fried foods

• sugary foods and beverages

Although dandruff is not a serious problem, it should be remembered that the cause of dandruff is not the same for everyone. The remedies mentioned above are some of the most natural and effective ways for dandruff treatment at home.
