Supreme Court Orders Long‐Term 6‐Year Third Party Insurance for All New Two‐Wheelers

The Supreme Court has now made it mandatory for all new two‐wheelers to be sold with six years of third party insurance, increasing the earlier five‐year requirement set in 2018. The Court highlighted that a large number of bikes on Indian roads still remain uninsured, which delays compensation for accident victims and weakens road‐safety enforcement.

Third party bike insurance covers injuries, death or property damage caused to another person, making it a legal necessity under the Motor Vehicles Act. To tighten compliance, the Court has also asked authorities to work on technology‐based checks, including a possible“no insurance, no fuel” system where fuel pumps verify insurance validity before refuelling an uninsured two‐wheeler. ANPR cameras and integrated insurance databases may also be used to identify vehicles running without valid cover.

This update is meant to improve compliance and ensure better financial support for people affected in road accidents. But new buyers may have to pay a higher upfront amount since the entire six‐year premium will be collected at the time of purchase
