Not just helmets, but safety harnesses are now also mandatory for children under the age of four while riding on a bike or scooter. This massive step towards enforcing better road safety has been taken by the Mangaluru City Police. It aims to protect young passengers from potential harm during commuting across the city.
DCP K Ravi Shankar (crime & traffic) has highlighted that not using a safety harness while riding a two-wheeler with children is a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. He also added that this rule is to be followed alongside wearing ISI-certified helmets for both the rider and the child. The city recorded 75 road accident-related fatalities so far this year. A total of 70 out of these 75 cases stemmed from reckless/negligent driving. Hence, to counter such unfortunate events and improve road safety for everyone, this move was made.
Mangaluru City Police is already efficiently enforcing this new law throughout the city without affecting the flow of traffic. AI-enabled cameras capable of identifying these violations are being used. Upon detection of this offence, fines are automatically issued.
