After years of anticipation, Egypt has unveiled the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), a USD 1 billion cultural landmark located just outside Cairo on the Giza plateau. The museum, billed as the world’s largest institution devoted to a single civilisation, houses over 50,000 artefacts spanning 5,000 years of history. A central highlight is the comprehensive display of Tutankhamun’s treasures, previously scattered across multiple locations, grouped for the first time in a purpose-built setting. Designed to attract millions of visitors annually, GEM forms a key pillar of Egypt’s strategy to invigorate its tourism sector and economy. With its futuristic architecture, the museum bridges ancient heritage and modern ambition, and positions Egypt anew on the global cultural map.
