Sri Lanka Waives ETA Fees for Tourists from 40 Countries to Boost Tourism

In a major tourism-friendly move, Sri Lanka began offering free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to citizens of 40 countries starting May 25, 2026. The waiver removes the previous $50–$100 visa fee, making short trips more affordable while travellers still need to apply online before arrival.
Eligible nationalities include India, the United States, United Kingdom, China, Russia, Japan, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and many others across Europe and Asia. The free ETA allows a 30-day double-entry stay (90 days for Maldivians) and can be extended.
This initiative is part of Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to rebuild its tourism sector after economic challenges. The government hopes easier and cheaper access will attract more high-spending visitors to its stunning beaches, ancient heritage sites, and tea plantations. Travellers are advised to apply for the free ETA via the official portal well in advance.
