Toyota’s iconic off-roader, the Land Cruiser FJ, is all set to make its way to India and this time, it’ll be Made in India. After being showcased at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, fresh reports suggest the SUV will hit Indian roads in the second half of 2028. Interestingly, India will also serve as the global manufacturing base for the model.
Production will take place at Toyota’s brand-new Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra, which is being developed with an investment of ₹26,000 crore. The Land Cruiser FJ will be the first model to roll off the assembly line from this facility. Although earlier rumours suggested that Thailand would handle production.
Mass production is expected to begin by August 2028, with an annual target of around 89,000 units, of which 40,000 units will be exported to markets like the Middle East. Toyota also plans to achieve high localisation levels for this SUV.
Dimension-wise, the FJ stands 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,960 mm tall more compact and agile than the Fortuner. Powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine (163 hp, 246 Nm) paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, along with strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.
