Since January 28, 2025, the Greek island of Santorini has experienced a series of over 200 earthquakes, with magnitudes peaking at 5.0. This unusual seismic activity has prompted thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate the island. In response, authorities have closed schools, restricted access to certain coastal areas, and deployed additional emergency resources, including coast guard and military vessels, to facilitate potential evacuations. Despite the frequency and strength of these tremors, no significant damage or injuries have been reported. Experts have indicated that the earthquakes are linked to nearby underwater faults and are not associated with volcanic activity from Santorini’s crater. The Greek government continues to monitor the situation closely, urging residents and visitors to remain calm and adhere to safety guidelines. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has described the phenomenon as “extremely complex and intricate,” emphasizing the need for preparedness and caution.
