Edinburgh and Birmingham airports have eased hand luggage restrictions, allowing passengers to carry up to two litres of liquids onboard, far more than the long-standing 100 ml limit. This shift follows the rollout of advanced 3D CT scanners, which can better detect threats without removing items from bags.
The move is being hailed as a step toward smoother airport experiences, but there’s a catch: not all airports are ready. Major hubs like Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester are still operating under the old rules. This patchy implementation has created confusion among travellers, especially those flying out from one airport and returning via another. Airport authorities and travel experts advise checking liquid restrictions for both legs of a journey, as rules can differ based on the airport’s scanner readiness. The UK government had initially aimed for a nationwide rollout by mid‑2024, but delays in equipment installation have slowed progress. Until then, passengers must stay informed to avoid last-minute surprises.
