H1N1 Is Spreading Across India: ICMR Says No New Strain Detected

H1N1 Trends Across India

Across India, health authorities are reporting a rise in Influenza A (H1N1) cases during the current seasonal flu period. Maharashtra is among the states seeing a sharper increase, with 1,109 H1N1
cases reported by August 21, 2026, compared with 942 cases recorded in all of 2025. Mumbai and Pune together accounted for about 65% of the state’s reported infections.
Similar upward trends have also been reported from other regions. In Delhi, 166 fresh H1N1 cases were recorded in 24 hours on August 27, 2026, taking the city’s cumulative count to 2,612. Total Influenza-A cases in the capital had also risen to around 3,300.
In Karnataka, surveillance data showed 4,212 laboratory-confirmed influenza-positive cases across 32 districts up to August 22, 2026. Greater Bengaluru reported 2,070 cases, followed by Bengaluru Urban with 1,011 cases. Health officials have described the rise as part of seasonal influenza activity and have advised awareness, not panic.

ICMR Clarifies No New Strain

Despite the increase in cases, ICMR has said the circulating Influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 viruses are not a newly detected strain. According to ICMR, these viruses are A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like viruses and have been in circulation in India since 2025. The observed changes are consistent with normal seasonal influenza behaviour.

Symptoms To Watch For

Common H1N1 symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body ache, fatigue, weakness, runny nose and blocked nose. Since these symptoms can overlap with other respiratory infections, people should avoid self-diagnosis and seek medical advice if symptoms persist, worsen or include breathing difficulty.

Who Should Be More Careful?

Young children, older adults, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions and those with weakened immunity may face a higher risk of complications. These groups should be more cautious and consult a qualified healthcare professional early if flu-like symptoms develop.

How To Reduce Risk

Simple precautions can help reduce the spread of H1N1 and other flu infections. Wash hands regularly, cover the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing, avoid close contact when unwell and keep indoor spaces ventilated. Wearing a mask in crowded or high-risk settings may also help.

The rise in H1N1 cases across India needs awareness, not alarm. Major Indian cities are reporting increased flu activity, but ICMR has clarified that no new strain has been detected. People should follow official updates, practise respiratory hygiene and seek medical advice when symptoms are severe or persistent.
