Major Amazon Cloud Outage Disrupts Hundreds of Apps and Websites

A widespread outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on October 20 2025 caused a global ripple effect that knocked offline dozens of major websites and apps. The issue originated in the US-EAST-1 region in Virginia and was tied to a domain-name-system malfunction that blocked access to the DynamoDB API, a core AWS database service.

Platforms impacted ranged from banking apps and smart-home services to gaming giants and airline systems, underscoring how deeply the internet depends on a handful of cloud providers.

Although AWS confirmed the bulk of services were restored within hours, the incident reignited concerns about infrastructure resilience and the risks of centralising critical digital services under a few major players.
