India Intensifies Cyber Fraud Crackdown as Losses Hit ₹52,000 Crore in Five Years

Cyber fraud has emerged as a massive threat to India’s digital economy, with losses surpassing ₹52,000 crore over the last five years and around 60 lakh complaints filed, according to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Scams range from UPI frauds and fake investment schemes to digital arrest threats and phishing calls.

In a major nationwide crackdown, authorities have disconnected 3.4 crore suspicious mobile numbers, blocked 2.27 lakh fake IMEI handsets, deactivated nearly 17 lakh WhatsApp accounts linked to fraud, and frozen over 59 lakh bank accounts. These actions have already prevented losses worth nearly ₹1,000 crore.

The government is strengthening defences through AI-based surveillance, the Telecom Act 2023, new cyber security rules, and upcoming biometric verification for SIM cards. Experts warn of rising AI-powered threats like deepfakes. Citizens are urged to report fraud immediately on helpline 1930 and stay vigilant against emotional manipulation tactics.

Amid growing geopolitical risks making India more susceptible to sophisticated cyberattacks, public awareness remains key to combating this evolving menace.
