In response to the surge in digital arrest scams, where fraudsters impersonate police officers to extort money, Maharashtra is set to implement a digital identification system for Mumbai Police personnel. The state has earmarked ₹4 crore to issue over 51,000 officers with smart ID cards embedded with QR codes and holographic elements, making them difficult to replicate. Accompanying this initiative is a mobile application that will allow citizens to scan these IDs and verify the authenticity of officers during any interaction, whether in uniform or plain clothes. This measure aims to restore public trust and deter cybercriminals exploiting police identities. However, cybersecurity expert Prashant Mali cautions that the system’s effectiveness hinges on public awareness and technological safeguards, noting that fraudsters may still find ways to mimic official credentials. The success of this initiative in Mumbai could pave the way for its adoption across other regions in the state.
