Digital fraud is rapidly becoming one of India’s most serious and silent threats. As UPI usage and mobile transactions grow, cybercriminals are preying on routine digital behaviour such as clicking unknown links or answering calls from fake officials. Many fall victim to scams disguised as urgent messages or even simulated arrests.
Government data shows that over 13 lakh UPI fraud cases were recorded in 2023 to 2024 alone with losses amounting to ₹1,087 crore. In addition, large-scale cyber frauds across India led to a financial loss of over ₹1,600 crore in the same period. High-profile incidents include professionals like doctors and retired officials being held in so-called digital detention and forced to transfer lakhs under pressure.
Cyber experts recommend simple safety steps such as avoiding public Wi-Fi, enabling two-factor authentication, creating strong passwords, and refusing to engage with suspicious calls. Digital awareness is now essential for personal safety in an increasingly connected world.
