Delhi High Court Ruling on Google Keyword Ads Could Reshape Online Advertising

The Delhi High Court delivered a significant blow to Google’s advertising model in a May 22, 2026 ruling. Justice Mini Pushkarna held Google liable for trademark infringement after it permitted rival bathroom fitting companies to use “Hindware” as a keyword, allowing their ads to appear when users searched for the popular Indian brand.

The 163-page judgment stated that Google actively “sells or auctions” trademarks without owner authorisation through its AdWords policy. Google was ordered to pay Hindware ₹30 lakh in damages and was restrained from using the mark or similar terms in keyword advertising.

Indian entrepreneurs welcomed the verdict. Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath and Shaadi.com’s Anupam Mittal highlighted how brands lose customers and revenue when competitors hijack their names. The ruling could force major changes in online advertising practices across India, one of Google’s largest markets, and open the door for more trademark enforcement cases. Google said it will align with local laws.
