Can Parkinson’s Disease Be Completely Cured?

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder which leads to various problems, including tremors, loss of balance and even mental health issues such as depression. Diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease

A proper and timely diagnosis of the disease is essential and there are different ways in which this can be done.

1. Assessment of symptoms

There are some very prominent symptoms of Parkinson disease which can help doctor in diagnosis. These include:

• Involuntary tremors in certain body parts

• Loss of balance

• Slow movement

• Stiffness in the muscles leading to low flexibility

• Depression and anxiety

2. Scans

The next way to determine Parkinson’s disease is to undergo a scan which includes an MRI scan, a PET scan, a head ultrasound or a dopamine transporter (DAT) scan. These scan help the physician to make a correct and definite diagnosis.

3. Diagnostic tests to rule out other ailments

The doctor may also ask for several other rounds of tests, including scans and blood tests to rule out the presence of other disorders which show symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. This helps to get a more accurate diagnosis.

At times, a well-trained neurologist may be able to confirm the presence of Parkinson’s in a patient by simply assessing the symptoms. In such cases, additional scans and tests may not be required.

Treatment options

As stated, there isn't a precise Parkinson's disease cure, but doctors follow certain treatment routines to offer relief to the patients.

1. Medication

Controlling Parkinson's disease with the help of medication is the most common form of treatment. Depending on intensity of the symptoms, doctor may prescribe medicines that one can benefit from. Also, secondary medicines may have to be administered to deal with other conditions related to Parkinson's disease, such as anxiety and anger issues.

2. Physical therapy

Physical therapy including physiotherapy, exercising, Yoga, etc., are effective in bringing relief from Parkinson's Disease as it improves the muscle mobility and gives relief from stiffness. It also relaxes the mind which brings relief to the ongoing depression that stems in an individual from not being able to carry out simple day-to-day chores due to Parkinson’s.

3. Surgery

There are some surgical options for patients with Parkinson's disease, however, these are prescribed only for advanced cases and to patients who no longer respond to medication and physical therapy.

Conclusion

A cure for Parkinson’s disease hasn’t been discovered yet. However, there are many methods through which doctors manage the symptoms, thereby bringing relief to the patients.
