10 Signs of a Weak Immune System

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of billions around the world but one good thing that got the attention it deserves is people’s interest in healthy habits that help boost immunity. How to boost your immunity, immunity-boosting supplements, and several other terms related to increasing immunity were among the most searched health-related topics on search engines.

Here are some of the common symptoms that indicate that your body’s immunity is not functioning at its best

1. Constant feeling of Tiredness

Living in this fast-paced world takes a lot out of you leaving you feeling sluggish. Although most of us are working from home, the work pressure has increased considerably. It is normal to feel tired and stressed at times. You should try taking a break to enjoy your time with family, spend time doing things that make you happy, and get a good amount of sleep. But if you still feel exhausted after getting good sleep and taking time off work then it can be a sign of low immunity. Constant low energy levels could be a sign that your immune system is struggling. In that case, you should check with your doctor to help you with ways to boost your immunity.

2. You easily catch Colds and Coughs

Catching a cold twice or thrice a year is common and when infected, it takes a week to 10 days for the immune system to fight off these infections and allow the body to recover fully. But if you are constantly experiencing a common cold and cough and the recovery time span is more than 10 days then it can be a sign that your body’s immunity is not performing at its best.

3. Frequent Tummy Aches and Diarrhoea

If tummy troubles such as constipation, diarrhoea, or gas are common occurrences then it can be a symptom of a weak immune system. A huge proportion (nearly 70 percent) of the immune system is in your GI tract. Hence it plays a key part in maintaining the overall balance of the immune system. If you are constantly feeling the tummy troubles such as stomach ache, diarrhoea, etc. means that you do not have enough healthy microbes in your gut and could be a sign of a struggling immune system.

4. High-Stress Levels

High-stress levels are directly proportional to a weaker immune system. Long and stressful working hours at work, emotional stress at home could cause sky-high stress levels. When you are stressed, it affects your body’s lymphocytes which protect the body from infections. So lower the lymphocytes, you are more likely to be vulnerable to infections due to a weakened immune system.

5. Poor Wound healing or Cold Sores around the lips

It is common to get a cut, scrape or burn when cooking or walking/running, or working with pointed tools. But the time your body takes to heal the wound reflects the strength of your immune system. The immune system has a vital role in healing skin wounds. It usually takes 3-5 days for the body to heal the skin wound. But if the healing process is taking longer and the skin is unable to regenerate then it means that your body’s immunity is not performing optimally.

6. Frequent Infections

If you are constantly fighting off infections such as typhoid, malaria, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, etc. more than once a year then it can be a sign of weak immunity. Such infections should not occur more than once a year. But if you are constantly getting infected then you might want to discuss with your doctor and look to boost your immunity and improve youth health status by changing your lifestyle habits.

7. Sudden High Fevers

The immune system is the first line of the body’s defense that fights viruses, bacteria, and other such pathogens to ward off any diseases. Sudden high fevers could be a sign of an approaching infection and medication helps dampen it. The recurring high fevers are a sign of a weak immune system that needs to be paid attention to.

8. Muscle and Joint Aches

A weak immune system can lead to muscle and joint aches. The immune system produces inflammatory chemicals and white blood cells when it fights off infections. But if the immune system is weak then these white cells get depleted while fighting off infections and the inflammation continues leading to joint and muscle aches.

9. Skin Breakouts, Boils, Eczema

Skin is considered the first barrier of the body. Lipids in our skin tissues prevent undesired organisms from getting into the body through the skin. Skin infections such as rashes, dry skin, boils, eczema, etc are signs of a weak immune system.

10. Always on Medication for one Illness or the other

Frequent infections and constantly being on medication is a sign of a weak immune system. If you are constantly dependent on medication for illnesses that keep resurfacing then it is time for you to boost your immunity.
