Ready to take the Covid vaccine? A guide to the CoWin Portal

Rishibha Gupta came to office after the weekend and the first thing she did after switching on her system was signing up her parents on the CoWIN portal for vaccination. Looking at her urgency, her colleagues enquired about it. The moment they learnt that the vaccination for the second phase of the Covid-19 vaccination has begun, they too started registering their family members. Well, what should have been a sound start to a week in a usual office with employees, aiming to finish pending projects, soon turned into a noisy classroom. ‘Dad, did you get the OTP?’, ‘Maa, what’s your year of birth?’, ‘Were you able to register?’ there were more questions floating around than answers. The chaos only ended after Rashi, the manager, walked in. No, she didn’t ask everyone to go back to work immediately. Instead, she understood the necessity and anxiety surrounding the vaccination registration and called a meeting in the conference room to explain the simple process. Well, if you are in the same situation as Rishibha, let us reiterate how Rashi was able to calmly guide everyone through the process and bring the house back in order.

As you would know that from March 1, the second phase of the nationwide vaccination drive began for people above 60 and those who are 45 or more and suffering from certain medical conditions. Ever since the news came out, people have been trying to register themselves and book an appointment through the government portal that links every vaccine shot to its recipient called CoWin. In many homes, the children are signing up their parents and grandparents as the latter aren’t as tech-savvy. But the process is fairly simple. Here is a step-by-step guide for what you need to do:

Step 1 You need to visit the website -  http://www.cowin.gov.in  to register yourself or your family members. There is no CoWINApp on the play store for registration available. The registration opens at 9 am and stays open until 3 pm daily. The slot for vaccination is subject to availability.

Step 2 On the portal, enter your mobile number and click on the OTP (One Time Password) option. You will get an OTP on your mobile. Now enter the OTP received and click on the verify button.

Step 3 Once you proceed, you will land on the registration page. Here you need to fill in the beneficiary's details, such as name, year of birth and gender along with the photo ID type.

Step 4 If you are registering a senior citizen, click on Register. But if it's for a person with comorbidities i.e. suffering from any pre-existing diseases, then click on YES where the form asks, "Do you have any comorbidities (pre-existing medical conditions)". In the latter category, the applicants will have to carry a medical certificate when they go for their vaccine appointment.

Step 5 Once registered, you will receive a confirmation message on your registered mobile number.

Step 6 After registration, the system will display the "Account Details". Here, you can add three more beneficiaries by clicking on Add More button. So, in total, four people can register via one linked mobile number.

Step 7 Now, you can fix an appointment by clicking on a calendar icon, below a column named Action. You will be directed to "Book Appointment for Vaccination" page where you will be required to fill in the beneficiaries' address details. Once you click on the search button, you will see a list of vaccination centres appear based on the search criteria.

Step 8 Choose a centre, according to your convenience and the available slots (date and capacity) will be displayed. After selecting the dates, click on "Book". A confirmation page with "Appointment Successful" message will be displayed.
There is also an option to reschedule. You will have to log in with your mobile number, enter the OTP and make the desired changes by clicking on the edit icon below the 'Action' column against registered individuals.

Conclusion

One can register via the AarogyaSetu app as well as it has a CoWINapp integration. You have to tap on the Vaccination tab and click on Proceed to follow the above-mentioned process. More than 1.5 crore Indians have been vaccinated against the contagious virus till now, according to the latest data from the Health Ministry. It is only a healthy sign that everyday lakhs and lakhs of people are taking the vaccine. Hopefully, now like Rishibha and her colleagues, you too have understood the process to register on CoWIN. Register your parents and get them vaccinated!
