Mumbai Police is working round-the-clock to deal with property owners who have failed to disclose the details of their tenants to the concerned authorities. The malpractice of renting out apartments without proper adherence to the directed reporting requirements is rising with each passing day in the city.
Throughout the city, several police stations have filed First Information Reports (FIRs) on such property owners. In the concluding few days of July, at least six FIRs were filed against such property owners within prominent areas of Mumbai, including Dadar, Goregaon and Shivaji Park. Mumbai Police have been filing these FIRs under Section 223 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). As per the authorities, this has been a strong-handed measure to enforce tenant verification norms in the city.
The police have highlighted that providing details of tenants living in rented properties in Mumbai is an essential requirement to reduce and prevent unlawful activities. Renting to unregistered tenants poses a major security risk as it makes it difficult for the authorities to track such individuals in case they are involved in unlawful acts while exploiting these rental properties.
Every property owner in Mumbai who is leasing their properties is hence advised to submit the tenant’s details in full to the local police station or online via this link. Property owners, on the other hand, are vocal against the Mumbai Police filing an FIR against them instead of issuing warnings first.
