Gurugram MP and Union Minister, Rao Inderjit Singh, has raised his concerns over the rise in water conservation violations in the city. He mentions how residential and industrial units are failing to adhere to the water conservation rules, despite existing regulations.
Rao mentioned how owners and builders of large industrial and residential plots are required to implement strict water conservation measures prior to obtaining occupancy certificates (OC), but instead, they are only doing so on paper. He says strict action will be taken against large residential and industrial units that fail to maintain a rainwater harvesting system as an effort to ensure maximum water conservation efforts.
Officials from the HUDA informed that houses built on plots bigger than 150 square yards within the HSVP sector are required to have a mandatory rainwater harvesting system. However, many are showing this system only to obtain OC, and they are non-functional in real life. To counter this, water conservation measures should be inspected biannually, even after acquiring the OCs. In case of discrepancies, OCs can be revoked, and builders and sectors can get penalised.
Additionally, direct actions will be taken against industrial units and residential societies that are releasing wastewater illegally into public areas due to a lack of a sewage treatment plant (STP).
