The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) had a target of building 3.79 crore rural homes, and latest reports suggest that the project has seen a fulfilment of near about 72% of this target as of March 17, 2025. In simple terms, out of the 3.79 crore rural homes, 2.72 crore houses have been constructed.
The implementation of this scheme has been done under the Ministry of Rural Development since 1st April, 2016. Now that a significant portion of the intended goal has been achieved, the ministry plans to expand the project. In the extended phase, an additional construction of 2 crore rural homes is being planned, which will increase the cumulative target up to 5.79 crore rural housing units.
As per data, states like Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have seen considerable progress under PMAY-G, with fulfilment of 98% of the allocated target. Others among the top 10 include J&K with its 90% completion, Bihar and Odisha with their 83% completion respectively, and West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Assam with more than 75% completion of the allocated target.
This scheme not only contributes to providing quality housing but also assists in job creation. Cleaner cooking practices, reduction of open defecation, better health standards, etc., are some of its other parallel benefits.
