Less than one in 10 people who need obesity drugs can access them, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said. The warning comes as the WHO released its first-ever guidelines on obesity injection medicines. At present, more than one billion people worldwide are obese. Without urgent action, this number could cross two billion by 2030.

Against this backdrop, the WHO has called for wider and fairer access to GLP-1 medicines. These drugs help people lose significant weight. However, high prices, limited production and supply-chain gaps continue to block access.

Notably, the medicines are already part of the WHO’s essential drugs list for overweight patients with diabetes.

Meanwhile, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said obesity must be treated as a chronic disease. He added that medicines alone are not enough, but can support long-term treatment.

The WHO also stressed that GLP-1 drugs should be used along with diet and physical activity advice. In many cases, long-term use may be needed to maintain weight loss. Despite this, current production can meet the needs of only about 100 million people, the WHO said. This accounts for less than 10% of those who may benefit.
