Eating peanuts daily may help improve brain blood flow in older adults, according to a new study from Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands.

The research found that consuming about two servings of skin-roasted peanuts each day improved blood circulation in brain areas linked to memory and thinking. The study focused on adults aged 60 to 75.

Researchers said better blood flow helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the brain. This is important, as reduced cerebral blood flow has been linked to cognitive decline.

The study involved 31 healthy participants. They followed a nut-free diet during one phase and ate 60 grams of unsalted, skin-roasted peanuts daily during another. Each phase lasted 16 weeks, with a break in between.

MRI scans showed a rise in overall brain blood flow during the peanut phase. Blood flow improved most in the frontal and temporal lobes, which play a role in memory and decision-making.

Participants also showed a small improvement in verbal memory and systolic blood pressure dropped by an average of 5 mmHg.

Experts said the findings are encouraging but stressed the small sample size. More large-scale studies are needed. The study was published in Clinical Nutrition.
