Over the last few years, many studies have been conducted to test the efficiency of psilocybin on mental health disorders and other ailments. A recent study has shown that the psilocybin chemical (found in many mushroom types) can benefit humans in two ways. Firstly, it can increase the lifespan of the skin and lung cells by more than 50%. Secondly, it can reduce the onset of age-related ailments like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and more.
While psilocybin was always known for its hallucinogenic properties, this study brought a new dimension to this chemical’s benefits. Using a mouse model, Louise Hecker, from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and her team found that psilocin could help people age at a slower pace than others.
In the study, mice that were given psilocybin lived longer than mice that weren’t given this chemical. Scientists have also demonstrated that this chemical prevents symptoms of ageing-related wear and tear in the body. It is believed that this chemical can also help prevent neurodegenerative issues, cancers and cardiac issues in aged people.
Though more research and human-based studies are awaited, it is expected to provide a huge breakthrough in treating older adults and improving their quality of life.
