In Japan, more than 6,000 influenza cases have been reported across approximately 3,000 medical institutions. The national epidemic threshold of 1.0 patient per institution has been exceeded, with Okinawa reporting the highest intensity at 12.18 patients per institution. Tokyo and Kagoshima are also among the most severely affected prefectures. In response to the outbreak, over 135 schools and childcare centres have been temporarily closed to contain the spread of infection.
Medical experts attribute the surge in cases to several factors. One major contributor is the post-COVID immunity gap, as reduced exposure to seasonal viruses over the past few years has weakened population-level immunity, especially among children. Additionally, the circulating influenza strain appears to be a mutated and more virulent variant of the traditional flu virus. Unseasonal weather patterns and climate anomalies have further accelerated transmission, catching public health systems off guard.
This outbreak underscores the importance of seasonal preparedness and the need for robust public health systems capable of responding to sudden viral surges. Although the situation remains under national control, it serves as a timely reminder of the fragility of post-pandemic immunity and the global interconnectedness of health risks.
