Colchicine is a well-established treatment for gout due to its anti-inflammatory properties. According to findings published in the Cochrane Library, low-dose colchicine may also offer cardiovascular benefits, particularly for individuals with a prior history of heart disease or stroke. The studies found that while colchicine reduced the risk of heart attacks and strokes, it did not lower overall mortality rates. It also showed no significant impact on coronary revascularisation procedures, which are used to restore blood flow to the heart during emergencies.
The analysis reviewed 12 studies involving nearly 23,000 adults who had either recently experienced a heart attack or stroke, or were living with chronic cardiovascular conditions. All participants had taken colchicine for a minimum of six months. Researchers assessed a range of outcomes, including deaths, heart attacks, strokes, and hospitalisations. Participants were divided into two groups, one receiving colchicine and the other serving as a control group.
Results indicated that among those taking low-dose colchicine, there were around nine fewer heart attacks and eight fewer strokes per 1,000 people compared with the control group. Importantly, the studies did not find an increased risk of serious adverse events in those using colchicine. Reported side effects were generally mild and short-lived, with nausea being the most common.
Although the research has certain limitations, it provides valuable insight into the potential role of low-dose colchicine in managing chronic cardiovascular disease. Further studies are needed to better understand its effects across different age groups and among broader populations.
