In new research conducted by Pune’s Agharkar Research Institute, researchers have found that zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZON) can significantly enhance kidney function and combat diabetes nephropathy. This can open doors for new therapeutic approaches for managing diabetes-related kidney issues.
Diabetes nephropathy is a complicated and debilitating condition that results from prolonged diabetes mellitus. It also affects around 20-50% of patients suffering from type-I diabetes. It leads to a decline in renal functions and often steers towards end-stage renal disease. Zinc deficiency is a common thread in diabetic nephropathy patients.
The study conducted by Pune’s Agharkar Research Institute an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology, showed that ZON treatment showed significant improvement of renal function in Wistar rats that suffered from diabetes nephropathy than those who received insulin-related treatment. ZON treatment also showed protective features against high blood sugar-induced inflammatory cell death. The study has been published in the journal Life Sciences concluding that ZON can prove to be a complementary treatment agent to treat complications of diabetes.
