Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss

If you are very fond of Indian food and cannot depend on oatmeal, smoothies or other western-influenced foods, then you can surely indulge in lot of desi dishes and still maintain a proper weight. Here are some of the best food items in each category:

1. Carbs:

Carbs are essential for any diet, but they contain a lot of sugar, so one must restrict carb intake if looking for weight loss. Rather than daily staple of rice and parathas, you can include:

a. jowar or bajra rotis.

b. complex carbs such as rajgira or dahlia.

These carbs keep you full for a longer time and also help to regulate fat and sugar in the body, thereby helping in weight loss.

2. Fats:

Avoid deep-fried puris and bhajias when having an Indian meal. Rather, cook your food in the traditional Indian healthy fats such as ghee and mustard oil. One must remember to reduce the consumption of fats if they are planning for weight loss.

3. Proteins:

Protein rich foodsare recommended when a person desires to lose weight. Animal based foods are a rich source of protein but if you are a vegetarian then you can substitute it with following :

a. Plant-based proteins such as soy, lentils & leafy greens

b. Dairy products such as paneer, curd and milk

4. Fibre:

Fibre is another important component of any weight loss diet plan. You must look to include a lot of fibre in your daily diet if you wish to lose weight quickly and thankfully, an Indian diet is usually loaded with it such as fruits, vegetables and lentils.

5. Liquids:

You need to keep yourself hydrated at all times, irrespective of the type of diet you are on. Apart from water, other liquids commonly consumed by Indians such as coconut water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juice are beneficial too.

While sweet dish after every Indian meal is a tradition, one must restrict eating them if they are trying to lose weight.
