Kwati Recipe for Children: A Nutritious Bean Soup

Having its origins in Nepal, this healthy bean soup is made from nutrient-rich ingredients, such as various beans and fresh spices. Ingredients Required

• Dry Mixed Beans – 2 cups (traditionally made from 8 different beans – kidney beans, black-eyed beans, chickpeas, soybeans, moong beans, green beans, black beans, and white beans)

• Mustard oil – 2 tablespoons

• Chilli powder, coriander powder, and turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon each

• Tomatoes – 4

• Onion paste – 1 onion

• Ginger & garlic paste – 1 or 2 teaspoons

• Salt – According to your taste

• For tempering

â—¦ Mustard seeds, ajwain seeds, cumin seeds, and fennel seeds – 1 teaspoon each

Steps to Prepare Kwati

Prepare this Kwati Recipe to make a bowl of delicious and authentic bean soup for your kids.

• Wash the beans and soak them overnight.

• In the morning, drain the water and boil the beans in fresh water for about 15 minutes. If you don’t have the time for this, you can also put the soaked beans in a pressure cooker and cook for about 4 to 5 whistles.

• In a pan, add oil and the ingredients for tempering.

• When they start to splutter, add the onion and ginger garlic paste. Sauté for a minute.

• Add the boiled/pressure-cooked beans and the spices (coriander, cumin and turmeric powder). Add salt and mix the contents well.

• Now, add the chopped tomatoes. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for about 3 minutes so the tomatoes turn soft. Check the salt and spice levels and adjust them according to your taste.

• Let the ingredients boil for a couple of minutes. Turn off the flame.

• Garnish with a bunch of finely chopped coriander leaves and onion slices for added flavour.
