Here are all the ingredients that you have to collect before you start making the Knol Khol recipe:
• Knol Khol (Kohlrabi): 1 medium-sized, peeled and diced
• Toor Dal (Split Pigeon Peas): 1/2 cup
• Asafoetida (Hing): A pinch
• Sambar Powder: 1 TBSP
• Mustard Seeds: 1/2 TSP
• Turmeric Powder: 1/2 TSP
• Curry Leaves: A few
• Dried Red Chillies: 2-3
• Tamarind Pulp: 2 TBSP
• Vegetables (optional): Carrots, beans, or drumsticks, diced
• Cooking Oil: 2 TBSP
• Salt: To taste
• Water: As needed
• Fresh Coriander Leaves: For garnish
1. Wash the toor dal and pressure cook it. Add 1.5 cups of water and turmeric powder. Cook the lentil until it is soft. Once it is cooked, mash it properly.
2. Take another pan and heat one tablespoon of oil in it. Sauté the diced Knol Khol until it becomes tender. You can add vegetables at this stage.
3. In a separate bowl, dissolve the tamarind pulp in a cup of warm water and set aside.
4. Get a new pot and heat it. Add the cooked dal, tamarind water, and Knol Khol to it. Also, add sambar powder and salt. Now, add water to get the desired consistency. Simmer the heat and cook it for 10-15 minutes to blend all the flavours.
5. Heat the remaining oil in a small pan. Add all the remaining spices and let them splutter. Add them to the sambar and mix well.
6. Garnish your sambar with freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve.
