Here are some tips to make your child serious about his studies:
• Spend time with him to know what he is studying, and develop interesting stories behind that topic. Motivate him to learn by giving him anecdotes about people who have made it big in life because they took their studies seriously.
• Never pressure or force him to study. Doing so will only increase his aversion to studying, and you will be doing more harm than good.
• Motivate him to create a timetable/schedule from when he returns from school to when he goes to bed. Encourage him to include playtime, snack time, break time, etc. in between. Ensure his schedule contains at least 90 minutes of study time in two or three sets every day.
• Check with him daily about his progress and compare it to the schedule he prepared. If he has followed it successfully, appreciate him through words, not through bribes like chocolates, gifts, junk food, etc.
• Know what interests him and what doesn’t. Encourage him to explore further on the subjects he is interested in. You can consider putting him on a one-to-one tutor programme for the subjects he doesn’t like or is not interested.
• If your child is not able to concentrate on a particular topic, engage him in some brain-stimulating activities like chess, puzzles, sudoku, and the like. You can also encourage him to do 30 minutes of yoga/meditation daily.
• Make the environment conducive to learning. Don’t play loud music or watch TV at a high volume when he is studying, as these can easily distract him.
• Never compromise on his play time and sleep time. When your child plays for an hour and sleeps 7 to 8 hours daily, his mind will be fresh enough to focus on his studies.
