What is HMPV Virus and Its Symptoms? Details Explained

HMPV Virus and symptoms

What is HMPV Virus?

HMPV is a respiratory virus that has been in circulation for about 60 years. However, the world learned about its existence and name only in 2001, when researchers from the Netherlands officially identified it. Infections with this virus often trigger symptoms similar to flu and other respiratory ailments.

Since this virus has existed for a long time, most of us would have already been exposed to it and also developed immunity for the same. HMPV infections are mostly found in kids exposed to the virus for the first time mainly because their immunity systems are not fully developed. Other people who are at high risk of HMPV infections are senior citizens, people with weak immune systems, and those undergoing treatments for cancer and with underlying health issues.

Though the symptoms and preventive measures of HMPV infections are similar to those of COVID-19, experts say there is no need to panic. HMPV infections are seasonal and most common in fall and winter. In India, cases may mostly occur between November and March.

However, the symptoms usually go off within 2-5 days if you take the necessary preventive measures. The mortality rate due to HMPV infections is very low; therefore, you can be assured that this is not as serious as the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak.

Symptoms of HMPV

Some of the HMPV virus symptoms to watch out for are:

• Symptoms similar to flu (coughing, sneezing, etc.)

• Congestion in the nose

• Runny Nose

• Fever

• Pain or soreness in the throat

• Severe symptoms may include pneumonia, wheezing, breathlessness and hoarseness of voice

• Infections in the upper or lower respiratory tract

Wearing a mask in public places, avoiding stepping out when you are sick, resting, and eating healthy foods to improve your immunity are some tips to manage these symptoms and even prevent yourself from the infection.

Conclusion

The recent increase in HMPV infections in China has caused panic worldwide. However, doctors have assured that HMPV infections are seasonal and not threatening. Only a few cases have been reported in India so far. However, it is important to adapt hygiene practices to keep yourself safe from HMPV infection.

Remember that a good health insurance plan provides extensive coverage for medical emergencies and ensures better treatment facilities.
