Maruti Suzuki has been the first car for most Indian households since its establishment in 1981. There might be a lot of things you don't remember, but your first car, who doesn't remember that? Labelled as one of the most renowned car manufacturers in India, Maruti Suzuki has recently been in the news for the launch of the brand-new avatar of its iconic Alto K10.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto has been the undefeated victor for over two decades in the entry-level hatchback segment of the market. Despite its size and slightly conservative styling, its popularity has not dwindled over the years. With its intelligent pricing strategy, high mileage, and highly reliable engine design, it is no surprise that Alto has been the highest-selling car in India for almost two decades, with sales crossing 4 million. The Alto was available in two versions, the Alto 800 and the Alto K10. The Alto K10 discontinued a few years ago as Mahindra did not update the model to comply with the BS6 emission norms.

What's new is that the K10 is now back in a brand-new avatar with a unique design, features, and much more. Apart from its new features, the new Alto also has a heftier price tag attached to it. Unlike its older version, the starting price of the new K10 is Rs 3.99 Lakh and goes up to Rs 5.84 Lakh. This unusually high price range for a hatchback brings to mind several questions. How is it different from the previous model? How is it to drive? And most importantly, is it worth its rather attractive price?

Let's check out some of the new features of the K10:

Exterior Design

In terms of design, the new-gen Alto K10 has been given a fresher and sleeker look. It looks more premium and appealing than the previous generation. The new model resembles its earlier version but has a cheerful look that will appeal to consumer tastes. Its most prominent features are its subtly sculpted chin and sleek headlights. It also has a wide hexagonal grille accentuating the car's width. The gently raked C-pillar gives the car a premium and sporty look, while the conventional tail-lights don't sway too far away from the traditional Alto design. It has 13-inch steel wheels wrapped up in 145/80 R13 size. It has alloy wheels that come as an extra option with two customized themes called "Glinto" and "Impacto." The wheels appear smaller under the high window line giving the car a bit of a dwarfed look. Overall, the new K10 seems to have a well-rounded and nicely balanced look that is sure not to disappoint its large base of consumers.

Interior Design and Features

Unlike the exterior design, Maruti has kept the interiors straightforward. The grey colour scheme personifies the plain and simple look of the interior. The pillars, seats, and headliners are all in a lighter shade of grey that enhances the perspective of the space from the inside. What's noteworthy are the new features that have been added to the car, making it a lot more modern than the previous generation. It has an all-instrument cluster inspired by S-Presso. The steering wheel, digital speedometer, and 7-inch infotainment system are sure to be a delight for any user. Maruti has given its steering wheel a sportier look than before and has both volume and phone controls. It comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. One does not need to take their eyes off the road to read the information on the digital speedometer, which is a very convenient feature. The new model, however, misses out on the tachometer. The sculpted dashboard ensures that the front passenger is afforded more knee room than before. The manual air conditioning system of the car is operated with rotary knobs that click into place. Beneath the knobs is an ample amount of storage space with two cup holders. The front window power buttons have been bizarrely placed between the dashboard, and there are no power windows for the passengers. The new model wins regarding space for both occupants and storage. The Alto K10 offers more leg room and a boot space of approximately 214 litres. Its interiors are designed to be a combination of practical and comfortable at the same time.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Maruti has always been known for its engines that deliver performance and fuel efficiency, and it does not disappoint with the 2022 Alto K10. The K10C 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine powers the hatchback. With a maximum power of 66.6 bhp and peak torque of 82 Nm, the car checks off both good acceleration and power delivery. The new engine has been designed keeping in mind the latest emission norms, including phase 2 of the BS6 emission norms. It comes with two transmission options, a five-speed manual and a five-speed automated transmission called AGS or Auto Gear Shift. The acceleration packs in a punch and will not leave you complaining about the lack of vigour. The engine is strongest in the top half of its rev range. Users may find a slight lag between shifts, but the AMT gives you the convenience of an automatic at a lower price. Despite the petite and skinny tires, the car offers impressive braking and steering. It also has a good suspension for the city roads in India. Along with this, customers are also provided with an engine protection cover which is part of the Mahindra Maruti Suzuki car insurance policy

The verdict: should you buy it?

Although the K10 is a relatively straightforward car, it has not failed to deliver on all its promises. The compromise on overall space and the higher price may act as deterrents for those considering buying the car, but Maruti has kept intact the core values of the car that appealed to consumers in the first place. It is easy to drive and maintain and is an all-purpose car that performs well in all environments. The new design gives it a fresh, sleek look that appeals to first-time buyers. It is an impressive car in the hatchback segment, and there is no reason to doubt that it will continue to top the sales chart just as it did before. After all, what is more, important than a reliable car?

Are you insured: what to do before buying your car?

If you plan to purchase the new Maruti Suzuki car, you must also consider picking up a suitable car insurance policy. This policy will help prevent unforeseen expenses due to accidents and several other reasons. You can obtain the car insurance price by consulting your Maruti dealership to get your car's IDV or the Insurance declared value. The Maruti Suzuki car insurance protects yourself and your car against several specific damages. The car insurance policy also offers an engine protection cover that is part of the comprehensive motor car insurance policy. This will cover your engine for any damage inflicted upon the engine or the loss of parts. Cover yourself and your car!
