U.S. court allows Alexa privacy class action to proceed

A Seattle federal judge ruled on July 7 2025 that tens of millions of Amazon Alexa users may pursue a nationwide class action accusing the company of stealthily recording and retaining private conversations for commercial insight, violating Washington’s consumer protection laws. The lawsuit, filed in 2021, contends Amazon failed to disclose continued data retention and exploited user speech, allegedly for ad and business uses. The court approved the class for registered Alexa device owners, though declined to expand it to others at the same household. Plaintiffs seek financial compensation and a court order demanding Amazon purge any unlawfully collected recordings. Amazon maintains that Alexa only operates when hearing its “wake word” and asserts built-in safeguards prevent unintended recording. The judge noted the widespread impact justifies class litigation instead of individual cases. This could mark a major precedent on consumer voice data rights, with trial likely to unfold in coming months.
