Tea While Pregnant

Tea is a common drink that almost everyone likes to consume. However, many pregnant women want to know if drinking tea during pregnancy is safe. Read on to learn more.

While it is safe to drink tea, doctors advise it to be consumed in moderation to avoid any complications. This is because tea contains caffeine, which can impact the foetus's growth. If you're drinking tea in huge amounts, it will impact your pregnancy too.

If you are a tea-lover then you can also opt for herbal tea as they are caffeine-free and contain minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron that are essential during pregnancy. They are also rich in antioxidant that makes it a great choice for expectant mothers. Tea infused with ginger and raspberry leaf is a popular remedy for morning sickness and may shorten labour. But do remember that even herbal teas may not be completely safe to drink during pregnancy. For instance, chamomile tea may lead to poor blood flow in a baby’s heart. Also, compounds in some herbal teas may adversely interact with prescribed medicines.

Restrict intake of herbal teas during the first trimester, particularly those containing peppermint and raspberry leaves, as it may lead to menstrual flow and uterine contractions.

Tips to consume tea while pregnant

Herbal teas are safer and more beneficial than non-herbal variants, so you can opt for them in pregnancy. But speak to your healthcare professional about the best teas to drink at this time for optimal prenatal care. However, drinking too much tea might be harmful even for a healthy person. So, you should limit its intake.
