1. Ban Chiang

Way back in 1495 BC, this was one of the most noteworthy pre-historical sites of Southeast Asia. It records some of the earliest evidence of metal manufacturing and farming here. Since 1992, it has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This place is noted for its distinctive red pottery. Excavations have revealed the site to be used as a Neolithic and Bronze Age burial ground.
Ban Chiang was accidentally discovered in the 1960s by a young Harvard Political Science student. Over the years, several things have been unearthed, like rice fragments, skeletons, bronze grave gifts, ceramics, etc.

2. Phu Phra Bat

This is yet another significant prehistoric park with matchless rock formations formed due to water erosion approximately 15 million years ago. These rock formations have been used as exotic backgrounds for several age-old artworks, way back 6 millennia. These unique rock formations are also the background for several religious shrines belonging to both Buddhism and Hinduism. The most significant temple here is named Wat Phra Phutta Bat Bua Bok, housing a Buddha Footprint sandstone. The current park has been established, reformed and restored by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand back in 1991.

3. Muang Sing

This is yet another one of the famous historical places in Thailand. It was once marked as the border of the Khmer Kingdom of Thailand, being its military headquarters. Although it is a lumbering landscape now, the principal structures are still noticeable. The most famous among them are the two Bayong-style monuments and temples, which can be witnessed in the acclaimed Angkor Wat Temples. This, too, is an excavation site, which has revealed multiple Buddha statues, household articles, etc. The most famous temple here is Prasat Muang Sing, which houses a central tower, representing Mount Meru, which is regarded as the centre of the universe as per sacred Hindu scriptures.

4. Phimai

This is yet another treasure trove of the prehistoric ages. Some of the monuments are considered to be even older than Angkor Wat. Although mainly Buddhist temples are the majority, however, there are traces of Animism and Hinduism too. It is a significant site of Khmer architecture. You can witness the Phimai Sanctuary, housing a Gopura, a Pagoda and a Naga bridge. You can even see the age-old walls, the remains of an old gateway, and a tomb called Men Brahmadat, the cremation place of the contemporary king. Most buildings date back to the 11th century, significantly resembling the Angkor Wat style.

5. Sukhothai

Sukhothai Historical Park consists of the remains of the age-old Sukhothai Kingdom, formed back in the 1200s. The term “Sukhothai” means “Dawn of Happiness” in Pali. It was once a majestic and picturesque kingdom. Even today, authorities have preserved nearly 15 temples, among which Wat Mahathat is the most important. This place was established nearly 800 years ago and served as the capital of Siam for over 100 years. It is currently recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This vast park also contains Sri Satchanalai National Park, Ramkhamhaeng National Park, the Royal Palace, and the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum.

6. Ayutthya

This is one of the most vast and magnificent cities in the world. It served as the capital of the 14th-century Siamese kingdom. The 18th-century Burmese invasions left it in ruins. However, its splendour is still unhampered. It marks the confluence of 3 rivers: Pa Sak, Lop Buri and Chao Phraya. The actual age of this place is still unknown. It is a land of innumerable monuments. Among them, some of the most important ones are Wat Phra Mahathat, the Phet Fortress, etc. Explore this significant site and create memories for a lifetime.
